Set agaisnt the backdrop of facist Italy,Robert Benigni plays a happy go lucky Jewish man. It's his fated arrival in a small Italian town to set up a bookshop that he comes across Dora (Nicolette) although she is not Jewish. His funny, whimsical ways and of course how he manages to squeeze a comic situation out of everything keep you laughing,be it wooing the beautiful Dora or in standing up agaisnt the Fascist impudence.
After a not so whirlwind romance, this does not include Guido's mad escapades and attempts to get close to Dora. They get married and are blessed with a son.Come world war two and the madman's (read:Hitler) quest for ridding Europe of all jews is in full swing and it comes to Guido's family. The family is separated but somehow Guido manages to hide his little son Joshua with him.Guido sees to it that little Joshua does not come to know of all the horrors happening around him.He tells Joshua that all the people in the camp are playing a game, and the first person who wins it gets a tank. And that if little Joshua complains of hunger he loses points, the points will be earned as long as he manages to hide himself from the camp guards.
Little Joshua then makes a sincere effort and does whatever his father tells him to do.Inspite of all the horrors and the sickening feeling around him Guido manages to keep his son smilling and happy at the thought of getting the tank.He manages to do so till the very end when he is shot by the German guards in advent of the American advance. The Jews in the camp are liberated by the americans and young Joshua is renuited with his mother.
watch out for :The one in which young Joshua rejoices after being rescued from the camp by the Americans who come riding in tanks.Young Joshua thinks he's won the game and the tank is his prize.
Another one in which Guido, just before he is shot tells young joshua to hide inside a sweatbox and not to come out until everybody has left.He makes his son laugh for the last time with a gesture.
